Do I have a right to an interpreter if my doctor does not speak my language?

Yes. Your health plan must provide you with language assistance. This includes the right to a sign language interpreter. If you know that you need an interpreter, let your health plan, doctor, and other providers know as soon as possible or when making an appointment.

The “I Speak” card shows what language you speak and can be used to tell the provider what language interpretation is needed for. You may request an “I speak” card by calling Health Rights Hotline at (916) 551-2100, or choose a language below.

Spanish : EspaƱol
Hmong : Hmoob
Chinese : ??
Russian : P??????
Tagalog : Tagalog

If you have problems with your health plan, you can call the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) at 1 (888) 466-2219, or visit their website.
