I have a hospital bill and cannot afford to pay it. What can I do?

You may feel overwhelmed if you receive a hospital bill. Do not ignore the bill. Work to resolve the bill or get help before the bill goes into collections.

If you have health coverage, make sure to give your health plan, Medicare, and/or Medi-Cal number to the hospital. The hospital should submit the bill to your health plan first. Here are some tips if you have health insurance. If you have Medi-Cal, check out this fact sheet.

If you are uninsured or you have insurance but cannot afford to pay for the remaining balance on the bill, you may be able to lower the bill through the hospital’s charity care or discount program. Contact the hospital billing department for an application. For more detailed information, visit the Hospital Bill Help website or contact the Health Rights Hotline for assistance.

Many hospitals are willing to set up affordable payment plans for patients, but be careful. Do not make any agreements until you are sure you are responsible for the bill. Billing errors are common. If you need help, contact the Health Rights Hotline.
