Resources for Children

Children who are not eligible for Medi-Cal may be eligible for other health insurance. Below are a few children’s health insurance programs.

Healthy Families

The Healthy Families program is California’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Healthy Families provides Health, Dental and Vision insurance to children below age 19 whose families make too much income to qualify for Medi-Cal. Children must be California residents whose family income is below 250% FPL to qualify. Children cannot have been on employer health insurance within the last three months.

Children enrolled in Healthy Families get their health, dental, and vision services through HMOs. There is a low monthly premium for Healthy Families as well as co-payments for services.

Due to recent budget cuts, Healthy Families implemented a waiting list on July 17, 2009. Click here for more information.

Healthy Kids (Children’s Health Initiative)

Some Counties have privately funded programs for children who do not qualify for Medi-Cal or Healthy Families. Many of these programs cover children up to 300% FPL. Sometimes these programs have waiting lists. Healthy Kids programs often provide health, dental, and vision benefits through health plans. The Healthy Kids programs often charge small premiums and co-pays similar to Healthy Families.

Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan

Kaiser’s Child Health Plan provides care to children under 19 who do not qualify fro Medi-Cal or Healthy Families. The plan covers children up to 300% FPL. Health and vision services are provided through Kaiser Permanente HMO. Dental Services are provided through Delta Dental. There are small premiums and co-payments for this plan.
